Dive Brief:
- Micro-Sphere SA, a capsule-filling and spray-dry specialist, is plowing money into expanding its manufacturing facility in Switzerland.
- The contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) will spend 21 million CHF ($21.8 million) expanding its GMP manufacturing, tripling its size from its current 1,415 sq. meters.
- The facility, which will house new technology for spray drying and capsule filling, will be operational by the fourth quarter of this year.
Dive Insight:
The CDMO is expanding because it is seeing greater demand in inhalable dosage forms.
"Both GMP spray drying as a particle engineering technique and low dose capsule filling are becoming increasingly popular across the market and at present there are very few CDMOs offering this level of capability, especially with our level of niche expertise," said Micro-Sphere founder and president of the board Michele Müller.
The facility will continue to produce both clinical and commercial products, serving customers in the U.S., Europe, New Zealand and Asia.
The facility, which is both SwissMedic and Food and Drug Administration approved, currently has 40 employees.
