Ireland-based Horizon plans big expansion, hiring spree in Chicago suburbs
- Horizon Pharma has leased 133,000 square feet at a space in Lake Forest, which is a northern suburb of Chicago. This will be the company's new U.S. headquarters.
- The move from Deerfield to Lake Forest coincides with an increase in headcount from 200 workers to up to 600 workers in the coming years.
- Anticipated revenue for 2015 is $670 million, up from $297 million in 2014 and $73 million in 2013.
Horizon Pharma is an example of a company growing rapidly via acquistion, including the $660 million purchase of Vidara Therapeutics in 2014 and this year's $1.1 billion acquisition of Hyperion Therapeutics.
There were discussions about moving headquarters to downtown Chicago, but a survey of the workforce revealed that only 27% of Horizon's employees live in downtown Chicago. Nonetheless, the company will retain a satellite Chicago office as it grows its workforce. The Lake Forest office is Horizon's fifth location in the Chicagoland area.
